NYC-based stand-up comedian Pete Burdette (“Comedy Pete” to his fans—well, he assigned the nickname to himself but the reasons behind this will be clear in a moment) interviewed L.A.-based comedian, actor, director, model, and publisher of the website you hold in your hands right now Meghan Jenkins for an hour-long show on Instagram Live on September 27.

The two discussed live comedy in our pandemic era, classic comedians and their influence on both Pete and Meghan (Jack Benny’s perfect timing still permeates our comedy sensibilities, forty-five years after his death), Meghan’s surprising love for hecklers, and Meghan’s road thus far from unknown to improv at The Comedy Store to her many current projects, like MeghaZine and The The Ding Wrong Show. The two also discussed her accidental modeling career, which was sparked by her invitation to compete in a contest to become a Maxim magazine cover model.

This week’s episode of The The Ding Wrong Show—the new online show created and hosted by Meghan Jenkins, recorded live on Zoom each Monday night and posted on YouTube immediately after—featured a song, “Ditto Kiddo,” by comedian and actor Jeff Richards, which was danced to by the “TTDWS Dancers,” and “The Aldrich Report,” read by John C. and written by Mark Aldrich.

It is not known if Mr. Richards is aware that he finally can add to his long list of credentials (cast member on Saturday Night Live) the fact that he now has had his work featured in a show with work by Mark Aldrich. Mr. Aldrich is happy to share the spotlight.

Keep Voting! We’re in the next round for the Maxim Cover

This spring, when Maxim magazine first invited Meghan to compete in an online contest to be a cover model, the people in charge of the contest did not share some details with her, or the other possible cover models of the future: some of what we at Meghan-Jenkins.com like to refer to as “the rules.”

She and her friends utilized their social media skills the first time around, blitzed their contacts, had fun, and enough people voted for her that she … did not come in first. (Sad face emoji.) However, one of her friends (his name is me) finally noticed an important phrase on Maxim’s somewhat cluttered website: “Next round.” She had not lost by not reaching first place, she had qualified for the next round instead. (Raised eyebrow emoji.)

There were three next rounds, a phrase which some of us might have once considered fun on a Friday evening out, but is nerve-racking in an online contest. A true underdog, Meghan made the cut each time, and finished in third overall.

Her competitors were professional models with slick portfolios and modelling agencies behind their campaigns and none were actors or comedians: readers voted, and Meghan advanced from round to round (there were three or four rounds) until she finished in third in the final round. For someone whose portfolio was comprised of self-styled samples from her “coronavirus cuties” comedy selfies taken in her home rather than beach photos styled by a professional team, this was a remarkable achievement.

Yesterday, Meghan qualified for the next round of voting in Maxim magazine’s cover model contest. If you have not yet voted for her, please visit the site and extend your support. The winner will appear on a cover of Maxim Australia, win a trip to Australia, and win $10,000 AUD.

I’m a big fan of Wide Awake Under Eye Cream by Wake the Dead Scrubs, as I wrote a couple weeks ago.

Shannon Vielma, the owner and maker of Wake the Dead Scrubs, and I had a great conversation recently about her products, her business, and how she started out. It was a lot of fun to get to know Shannon, and now you can, too:

Meghan: When did you begin making skin and hair care products?

Shannon Vielma, Wake the Dead Scrubs: I started making face and body products for my family in 2015. My mom and daughter both struggle with skin conditions (psoriasis and eczema) so they found it difficult to use drugstore bath-and-body items. I wanted them to have access to the same fun scents and products without the breakouts, flares, and rashes. Then they suggested I share my products on Etsy for others to enjoy. Over time I used my education and creativity to expand the collection. In 2018, with the help of a few of my favorite cosmetologists/stylists I started to attempt to “dupe” [duplicate] popular salon hair care products. In time we found formulas that really worked. Now my products are stocked in several salons nationwide.
